Alternator Advice

Hi all,
We have a 2002, 3.2 DiD GLS SWB (4m41) with a faulty alternator. It's not charging the battery and Mitsubishi confirmed this. But a replacement from them without installation is R24,000. Last time i checked and a recon alternator was going to cost about R8000. My partner then had her auto electrician put one in for around 5000. I'm not sure if he had the original one reconditioned or swapped it out for a reconditioned one. We're trying to find our invoice. Either way, it's still not working.
Can the wonderful minds of this forum please advise on what is a good route to take to sort this out.
I'm in the Northcliff area. Would you opt for a new OEM part, try find one from a stripped car, have the current one reconditioned, or what?
All our dash lights come on, we can't change console settings... Does that indicate something else is a foot?
TIA
