2.8 TDI Engine Stall after start when cold

I have a 1999 Pajero 2.8TDI and I have had problems lately when I start it in the morning, the engine starts fine and Idles correctly for a few minutes then as soon as I start driving I lose revs and the engine starts misfiring on cylinders before it stalls at first I thought that it fuel starvation but when the engine starts sputtering it throws out allot of gray smoke with a smell of diesel, It must be flooding the engine, must be a pump problem?
I know that my head gasket is starting to go as I have a little bit of compression in my radiator but not much but that should be normal after 347500km on the clock can the problem be that it pushes pressure on the diesel pump or is it a pump problem.
Question two how can I fix or set my gearbox on jumping out of first gear when you pull away.

Thank you
Neil

Hi Neil,

I have the same car and had the same issue. It was the Diesel pump in the end. Fixed it and it never happened again.

Myself not being an expert, the guy that fixed it says that when the car stands overnight, the diesel runs back from the pump. There is still some fuel in the pump so it works for a short time.

Hope it helps.

Thank you Hank that does help
I actually had a problem again this morning and when I moved the car over there was a big puddle of Diesel on the ground, I had a look at the injectors and all the pipes but there was no leaks, I pumped the manual hand pump on the filter and spotted a stream of diesel coming out of the top of pump itself just below the throttle.
I will have to strip it tomorrow and have a look at all the seals inside.

definitely, if it gets air there (or leaks) it would cause a break in the fuel supply. So that might be your problem and perhaps easy to sort out.
