I'm Looking for a SWB preferably a manual but will go for a auto if need be as they seem more readily available and the 3.8 only come with auto..sigh.

A couple of options -

3.2 DID - prefer Gen 3 with either box fitted. But most are up country and I would need someone willing to go look and test drive

Early 2002 3.8 with +-200,000Km also up country

2007 local in Capetown 3.8 with +- 120,000kms

I really like the '2000 3.2 gen 3 SWB manual my daughter has - goes like the proverbial bat out of hell - Boy can it go! so would get one of those as 1st option then an auto 2nd option as diesel fuel is lot cheaper than petrol but then the purchase price is higher for the diesel - swings and roundabouts...

Now the 3.8 V6 - what are the differences with the gearbox for those years? - I read here the gen 3 - Gen 4 auto box (3.2 did?) was changed sometime mid 2004 -2005? then back again later on - does anyone know if the 3.8 auto box was also changed for those years? If changed, which 3.8 has the better autobox... 2002 or 2007?

I read online the later 2007 3.8 motor had a power increase up to 184kw I think it was. Just wondering about those auto boxes.

How bad is the actual fuel consumption on the 3.8 Auto? town / open road and towing? Getting between 10-11L / 100kms with the 3.2 DID.

I have a VX Prado so used to +- 6 - 7Km/L but swambo might dig her heels in about getting another "Tiny" fuel sipping V6"

Yip, 6 to 7 km/L is what you'll get.
After 2003 all Pajeros are auto.
I don't understand your autobox dislike, they are wonderful.
Gen3 started with a 3.5V6. During 2003 was the big facelift, the 3.8 was introduced and the manual box dropped. During 2007 the Gen4 was introduced and the 3.8 MIVEC (184Kw) was placed under the bonnet.

With all due respect to the OP, looking for a fuel sipping, fast 4x4 (I’m talking about proper off-roader) is going to get you nowhere. You will have to compromise somewhere so rather search for the most well looked after example you can find in your price range, or get a GTI if you want a reasonably economical pocket rocket.

Thanks for the replies, The "Tiny fuel sipping V6" comment was supposed to be tongue in cheek Got to feed the horses....

I just prefer manual boxes but depends on the 4x4. I love the auto in my Prado and don't think a manual box would suit it but would want a manual in a Patrol 4.8 if I could get one - but like the later Pajero it only comes in auto.

I think I better go drive a auto 3.2 DID and see how they go and for what its worth I do think a auto is far easier to use in dunes - just drop a gear and keep the momentum going uphill - not so easily done in a manual.

Also don’t forget, the Pajero has a tiptronic function so you can always use it as a manual (without a clutch).
