Knocking sound

Good day.
I’m a new member and new Pajero driver.
I have a question quickly please.
I live and work in Dameraland, Namibia and travel a huge amount on these gravel roads and on time off I pack ‘Gertrude’, kids and wife and go bush camping.
When driving on either the standard gravel roads or on the more ‘off the beaten’ track roads, every now and then I hear a knocking sound which by my best guess is coming from the suspension. This occurs at various speeds from about 80km on the standard gravel to a low range crawl at 20. Not all the time either.
I was wondering if could be an indicator that my suspension is reaching the end of its life time?
Oh, and one more question...
Which is the better suspension, with out creating a huge stir, for heavily corrugated gravel roads? If anyone of you have travelled on northern namibia’s “D” roads will know what I’m talking about.
Thanks in advance and have a good excursion!
