I recently purchased my first Pajero (2012 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, 3.2DiD, Common Rail engine), after years of of being fan, and boy am I stoked!

I immediately had the engine and gearbox serviced, as there was no service history on the vehicle.

Only after a week or so did I realize that the lights on the cluster that indicate in which drive mode I am (2x4/4x4/4x4H/4x4l) isn't working as I think it should.

When engaged in normal 2x4, it doesn't light up the rear wheels on the cluster. So at first I thought that it might just be a light that is burned out, but then I noticed that when I engage in 4x4 Low Range, all 4 lights go on.

Is this normal, or is it something I need to have looked at?

Firstly congrats on the purchase. May you have many happy kms travels.

Secondly these vehicles work with switches mounted on the transmission, and vacuum switches in the engine bay. They in turn will activate the dash lights to confirm what drive mode you are in.

You need to determine if all the drive modes are engaging. Thus go offroad and test using someone to watch if the front wheels are spinning in severe 4x4 conditions, as well as low range is engaging.

Once you have confirmed that mechanically everything is working, that will determine that there is a problem with the dash lights.

These vehicles are not known to give dash light problems. What is a common problem is the switches on the transmission and the vacuum switches do become problematic if the owner does not regularly engage all modes, and the switches stop making full contact.

Congratulations on your purchase and hope that you will be as happy with your Pajero as I have been.

I have just done a lot of fault finding on my drive train lights and hopefully the following will help.

First just stand outside the car with it running and get someone to engage 4x4H and you should clearly hear the system engage. If not remove the front bash plate and again with the car running get someone to engage and dis-engage the 4x4H and you should see the system kick in and out.

The rear wheel green lights should always be on. The fact that yours are not on when in 2H makes me think the sensors might not be making contact on the gearbox.

Were they working before they serviced your engine and gearbox?
