I am new to this forum and definitely a novice when it comes to engines but am absolutely willing to do things myself, where possible. My 2000 pajero is cutting out on low idle for some reason. I took it to be looked at he talked about changing 5 switches ,but that would involve dropping the gear box. Admittedly, he probably realized that he needed to keep things in simple and basic terms to help me understand. He said one of the switches was bad and he would always change out all 5 when this happens but they cost about R1000 each.

I could not find where these 5 switches are located but I think he must have been referring to the two switches on the back of the gearbox, the one on the front diff and then the two front vacuum switches below the air filter. OR is there a different set of 5 4x4 switches that I have missed?

My question is this - would that cause the engine to continually cut out when I stop at the lights - notably less so if I move it into neutral?

The switches on the transmission and the vacuum solenoids have nothing to do with your Paj cutting out whilst idling. Don't even go there to solve this problem.

Start with the inlet system. Check all electrical connections, sensors vacuum pipes and air meter.

You may have to visit a auto electrician. Depending on where you are, I suggest:

A dirty throttle body plate could also cause stalling at low revs. As the throttle body plate is baerly open at idle, airflow is minimal. Any dirt that collects on the edges of the plate will further restrict airflow and can cause the engine to not receive enough air and die.

It's a very simple procedure to perform, all you will need is some throttle body cleaner and a rag. I did mine shortly after buying mine (secondhand) and it was quite dirty. Did the same on all my cars and all the oldies were dirty.

Give it a try, maybe it solves your stalling problems.
