2011 Pajero Sport 3.2 Fuel gauge inaccurate

Tue Feb 04, 2025 9:39 pm

We have the regular 70L tank and an aux tank above spare wheel (about 30L). Needle stays at FULL mark until aux tank is empty. I found that the range I got for aux tank was a good 120+km more than expected. Fuel gauge needle goes up and down with ignition on and off as per normal, just give incorrect readings. If I shake car then I can hear some fuel (quite low) but needle says 50% tank.

Everything else is in vehicle is working fine. Is the first place to look inside the fuel tank at the level / float sensor or should I be checking for something electrical? Many thanks for any tips...

Got some weird things going on here:
Opened up fuel tank inspection hatch, tested fuel gauge level sensor and everything is 100%. Level corresponds close enough to what is in tank. So not fuel level.

Then looked at connections from AUX (not sure volume nor who supplier was) to MAIN tank and see that AUX level of outlet is 49cm from garage floor and pipe runs to the inlet of MAIN tank via T-piece linked to main filler pipe. Height of that is 62cm. Are suppliers / installers out of their minds?
Last two refills were 91L and 93L so definitely filling up more than the standard 70L tank BUT methinks AUX can empty more than other times (which explains sudden extra range) but cannot see how it empties completely with 49 upwards to 62cm issue. Any ideas?
