Gen 3 instrument cluster clocking out

Hi Guys, hope you can help. My 3.2. DID 's instrument panel goes dead every now and then. It stays like this for a couple of km's and then just turns on again. The dashboard lights remain on and even the flickers and harzards works normally, but all the gauges are dead as if switched off. At first I thought it might be a short circuit or a loose plug somewhere but it happens even when driving on a fairly smooth surface without a lot of shudder and stays off even if driven over rough terrain, just to turn on again a couple of kilos further as if switched on for the first time. Any ideas?
