Gen 2 Headlight upgrade

Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:02 pm

Hi

I own a SWB Blister fender 1999 3l V6 pajero and find that the righthand headlamp in not as bright as the left one.
On the whole the lighting is very poor when driving wity normal lights on (brights is ok).

Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this lighting problem or on a suitable upgrade option?

Donald :D

Your bulbs are on their way out. Get yourself a pair of Osram Nighbreakers - about R160 for a pair from Midas. The Gen2 uses H4 bulbs

First thing to check is the voltage at the head lamps (relative to the voltage at the battery).
If there is a drop of more than ±0.25V, install relays close to the head lights.

to fit a relay to the lights to help with voltage is pretty simple.

also look at the interior and exterior of the lights. They can fade and hamper light coming through.

If it's faded on the outside then brasso might help but if it is faded on the inside a plastic rebuilder might be able to open polish and close or just buy a new set.

bad lights at night isn't fun, it's dangerous!

An easy way to check whether a voltage drop is the problem:

Use two nice thick wires, the one with an in-line 20A fuse.
Connect one between battery + terminal and the globe's + terminal.
Connect other to - terminal of battery and - terminal on globe.
If globe glows brighter, fit a relay, as Marius indicated.
(Make sure the earth connection is good too)

just a thought - I just remembered.

The gen2 uses negative switching so be careful.
