Re: Gen3 : DIY - Auto Transmission fluid change
Hi Marius,
Thank you for the guide!
I got my new, secondhand Pajero 3.5 Auto last week and I noticed that the Transmission Oil is way above the high mark. This is also my first auto and the gear changes doesn't feel right, it would rev up before "grabbing" a gear.
The last two services, 190 000km and 200 000km wasn't done at a Mitsu dealer, so I am thinking that maybe they changed the oil, with a general ATF and overfilled it.
So I'm going to do the oil change this weekend and hopefully sort out the box!
Can you recommend any specific gasket maker I should look for?
Thank you!
(I will do a proper introduction as soon as I have some photo's off the tar!!
)

Re: Gen3 : DIY - Auto Transmission fluid change
I used the heinz or reinz or something sealer that goldwagen sold me to seal a polo's aluminium sump.
It works great.
Remeber the aluminium is veeeeeeeeery soft. Don't overtighten the bolts. Manual specifies 11nm
Both surfaces have to be spotless - clean with solvent
I tightened fingertight to slightly squash the sealant, let it stand for 15minutes and then tightened by hand with socket on screwdriver head thing.
Then let it stand overnight before filling.
So far no leaks.

Re: Gen3 : DIY - Auto Transmission fluid change
Thanks for a good thread Marius. I drained and flushed my auto box this week - here are a few things I can add, if not already mentioned:
1 - I pulled off all the rubber front hoses to drain the cooler and other gearbox pipes (1st pic).
2 - I used a plastic transparent pipe and drained all the ATF from the gearbox, by sucking out bits at a time and then blowing it into the oil pan. If you only take out the drain plug, there is still some ATF left that sits just below the drain plug hole. It is a fair amount of oil, if you want to properly drain out dirty ATF, like in my case (2nd pic)
3 - I bought cheap ATF from Midas, filled to the required level and then drove around for a short while. I then repeated steps 1-3 above. I now need to drain it again to see if the ATF is clear yet or not.
I ordered the filter and will install as soon as it arrives.
Pic 1:
Green arrows shows flow direction
Red arrows the steel pipes/fittings
Yellow arrow No.1 - top of oil cooler pipe
Yellow arrow No.2 - bottom of oil cooler pipe
Pic 2:
Note the scew cut on the front of the plastic pipe, enables you to reach the last little bit of oil

Had the same experience, I was told this is impossible with the auto gearbox! Made me feel like a fool. So glad to hear somebody else had the same experience!bredsj wrote: ↑Sat May 21, 2011 8:36 pmThanks a lot. My Paj is still relatively new, 2006 model with 80k kms. I once drove through water about 0,5m deep and the clutch started to slip. It stpped after a while. I took the Paj back to the dealer and they checked, said everything was fine. Any comments?

Re: Gen3 : DIY - Auto Transmission fluid change
Good day,
I have a 2008 3.8 v6 Pajero had it serviced at a reputable garage ,oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs and transmission/transfer and axle oil changed, Atf oil from Mitsubishi dealer.
However after enquiring about my vehicle I was informed that the car doesn't want to go in reverse(auto gearbox).
What now, I am leaving on holiday and have no confidence in my vehicle and are going on a 2 week trip to the mountains.
The garage have my car now for 2 full days and are waiting

Really not sure, what are they saying its doing? just not engaging? or is the selector not able to move (like its stuck) into reverse.
I'm having issues with My Autobox... 2008 DiD, so same box. My main problem was 2 missing bushes in the controller assembly (which Im in the process of getting sorted)...but I am finding now that from Drive position, moving the gear selector forward D->N->R etc, from Neutral, it wont go into reverse (Ive literally got to force the selector lever into reverse position) so this is worrying me that somewhere along the line, something is hooking somewhere, or catching where it shouldnt be.
I'll keep monitoring this thread

Stab in the dark:
There is a cable that runs between the gear lever and the brake pedal. It operates the release mechanism, when you press the brake pedal, to enable moving the lever out of Park to Reverse. I suppose it isn't inconceivable that a problem with this cable could possibly cause your symptoms.
