Broken Aerial - Gen 3

Wed Sep 14, 2011 1:57 pm

Hi - my aerial has broken off and now I get a horrible noise as the aerial tries to retract until it times out.

1st question - easiest way to remove power to aerial while I decide what to do regards replacement - is there a dedicated fuse or do I need to cut a wire somewhere?.
2nd question - I assume its better just to put a whip aerial on regards cost - almost too scared too ask cost of OEM part ?
3rd question - were does one access the aerial- I assume from inside the wheel arch after removing plastic liner ?

Thanx
Tim

Just haul the old one out and replace with a whip antenna. Dunno about the Gen3 but the Gen2 power antenna is over r2000. A whip antenna can be had for under r150

You will need to go through the fender lining to get at it but the tricky part is routing the new cable through the dash. This can be made easier by cutting off the old cable at the antenna side and securing the end of the new cable to that and pulling it through.

Job made easier if you take the front wheel off.

Hi Tim,
My Gen3 aerial is bent so it doesn't retract all the way down. I asked the dealers for a quote on a new one with my last service....I think they said something like R900!!! So for the moment it's staying like it is! I think the aftermarket option will be the best bet.

After a longish trip and no or poor readio reception, I investigated the problem and found that the cable in the engine bay had snapped. More like being cut by a knife, I should think! This explained the problem I had with RDS in this thread https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... =27&t=2771 And this after I fitted a new radio! I joined the cable with a male and female radio antenna plug, and all is well. :)

Anyway, the cable is not that difficult to remove. If you look beneath or behind the bottom cubbyhole, you can see the cable coming through the firewall. Remove or loosen the left hand side panel (it just clips on) in the footwell and behind that the cable is joined with the one coming from the radio by means of a plug. Just pull it out and you dont then have to remove the whole cable running through the dash.

Buckinghamrd,

1. A broker aerial is no train smash. It is easy to replace the mast and the last time I did it (2004 3.8 GLS), a new mast at the stealers cost about R450,00.

2. Unless you have very long arms, you will need the assistance of a second person. Do the following:

a. Buy a new mast.

b. Get your assistent to switch the radio OFF and then ON. As the remaining aerial stub comes out, grab hold of it and pull up wards till it comes out of the aerial socket. At the bottom of the stub, there will be a long piece of "nylon" with teeth on the one side.Remember the direction of the teeth.

c. Align your new mast and the "geared nylon" strip as instructed in par b. Push the tipp of the "nylon" strip into the socket as deep as it will go.

d. Get your assistent to swith the radio OFF. The nylon will be pulled in by the motor and then you will have to giude the mast into the socket. Viola. your radio will be back on line.

3. I am working on fitting an wxtra swith on the dashboard next to the existing one, that will enable me to keep the aerial fylly retracted but with the radio still ON. This will allow us to listen to CD's whilst traffeling in ann aerial unfriendly area. My extra switch is already in and I must just get off my backside and do the electrical bit. Reason for not doing it now, is that I do not plan to go on a trip for the remainred of this year.

Regards, Cloyd.

Hi Cloyd

Thanks for the extra info - seems it might be worth a look as although the aerial + 1/2 the nylon is missing the motor sounds fine.

Take note of the post above by Bigwill though - follow his link as I am going to do what he did - never saw any point in the half mast position anyway and his modd eliminates need for additional switch you planing on.
