Gen 2 Ignition

Mon Nov 14, 2011 9:09 am

Hi All
My Pajero was broken into yesterday and they destroyed the ignition...so cant start the car. I need to find out how to take the ignition cylinder out and also need to find out where I can find a second hand one? Im in the Sandton area. Any help would be great.
My number is 0711370092

Many Thanks
David

remove plastic surround

you will see there is an aluminium holder that secures the ignition barrel. On top and at the bottom there is a bolt through it that has a rounded head so you can't get a socket or anything on it.

There are 3 ways to get this bolt out.

1. Dremmel a slot for a screwdriver and screw it out - the bolt is not too tight in there
2. use a flat screwdriver and hammer and try to knock the bolts anti clockwise to get them out - this is finnicky but when done right it comes out pretty quickly - I have used this method twice with success
3. cut the bolt in the middle by dremmeling top and bottom with cutter - when replacing you need to insert spacer where you removed material otherwise the tightening procedure will crack it.

remove all the connections and take the ignition barrel to a locksmith for fixing. Don't take it apart yourself. There are tiny bits in there that spring everywhere when you open it and for an inexperienced guy it is next to impossible to reassemble.

Some more info

It's installed at the factory as a shearbolt. It looks like this

When the tighten it the top head snaps off and leaves the bolt inside. This makes it difficult for thieves to take the ignition barrel off.

Method no2 is actually the easiest way of doing it. Just try it. You don't even have to hit hard with the hammer. I have made a quick sketch of what angle to hit it.

Thank you for sending the Diagrams - great use

I have managed to get the bottom bolt out using method 1, but no luck with the top bolt. Ill try method 2 on the top bolt. I am having trouble with space, so Ive removed the steering wheel.

Thanks for the great advise - Ill keep you posted.

Hi There

Managed to get the Ignition Barrel off and delivered to a reputable locksmith. They have informed me that the chances of repairs are minimal. I have phoned around for a second hand unit, but with no luck.
Any idea on where I could hopefully source a second hand unit?

Many Thanks

  1. Is it not an insurance claim?
  2. Try PartHunt in Pretoria
