Altenator - 99 3.5 LWB

Mon Jan 23, 2012 12:39 pm

Hi Guys,

My alternator packed up, checked fuses and charging with a multimeter but it only read 12V`s - took it out and had it tested at Motolek which confirmed that it`s dead.

I phoned around for some pricing, firstly i could not find a Bosch so i had to go for the Japanese makes. Ranging between R800 and R1200. The one for R800 has a 6 groove pulley and my one is a 5 groove pulley(if i am counting correctly on the photo). Will the 5 groove belt run on the 6 groove pulley or should i swap the pulleys? Sounds like a job to get them loose!

The new one is also rated 110Amps while mine is only 100Amp, my understanding is that this does not matter?

Thanks!

I would fit the new alternator, to make sure everything (except the pulley) will work.
If all looks fine, ask your local motor-electrics workshop to swop the pulleys for you.
Make sure that the pulley runs in the correct plane (shaft length and config). They might just have the correct pulley if the new one won't work.

110 is 'better' than 100.
