Hi All,
I have noticed a small knocks coming through to the steering wheel when going over slight bumps or when driving on fairly smooth gravel roads. Its hard to explain but it feels like there is something loose somewhere in the steering column. There is absolutely no play on the steering wheel but when going over bumps I can hear a faint knocking noise with a knocking "feel" in the steering wheel. Tried various tyre pressure and its still the same. This is my 1st Pajero and it has been doing this since new so not sure if this is normall or if there is a bolt or something that needs a bit of tightening?
Any suggestions where I can start looking for something that is loose, Car only done 4000km so I could take it to agents to check but thought it would be nice to do it myself and at the same time learn a bit more about the vehicle.
Would checking the bolts described here be a start?

If anyone has any diagrams of the steering column, that would also be great! Thanks guys

Re: Steering column Knock
Hi All,
I dont know if this fix applies to Gen 3 & 4 Pajero's but I found that the front sway bar rubber mounts on my Gen 3 was responsible for a knocking sound every time I hit a slight bump at low speed. I was able to remove the two brackets, below the radiator and beefed up the rubber mounts by using some insertion rubber strips. It seems the rubber mountings wear thin on the flat side causing a knocking sound as the sway-bar flexes inside the mountings. This car has done over 200000 km and I will replace the rubber mountings when the "stealers" have them in stock. This fix seems to have sorted out the knocking sound for now.

CVS,
If the car was old, I'd say check the rubber bushes on the anti-roll bar as WaldoH suggested. BUT, the car is new so maybe check if they are in there at all.
If it was my car: straight to the dealer with a rocket under the principal dealer's seat.

Re: Steering column Knock
your pajero doesn't have the bushes like the link you posted to my gen2 antiroll bar bush replacement.
The gen3 and gen4 pajeros have stabilizer links and are prone to failure and cause knocking.

Re: Steering column Knock
Thanks for the comments, sorry for the late response, been a hectic week at work so havent had much time to check in! I think i will pay the dealer a visit and ask them to check it out, at least i can tell them where to look, not keen on them 'fiddling' too much and messing something else up.
Maybe the absence of a dash rattle is due to my suspension wobble![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

I have a Gen 3 CK with 150k on the clock, with the same tuk-tuk noise at slow speeds and bumps. They found the Rack-ends were worn (not the Tie-rod ends) Will also try the above mentioned Greasing in the interim.
Lift the front of the car under the body behind the front wheels, so the wheels are just off the ground. (Do not jack under the suspension). Then turn the steering back and forth and press in the rubber belows just past where the rod enters to feel the knuckle. You will imediatelly feel the play on the rack end joints on either side to the rod. You can then also lift the the wheel with a tyre lever (cantilever with a little block)to check for abnormal movement in the other suspension rubbers related.
LH are more proned to wear due to LH wheels more often going offroad.
The rack-ends is not a separately sold item from Mitsubishi like Toyota. Mitsu want to sel you the whole steering rack at ~R12500 excluding labour of R2000 and excluding alignment of R580. They are however replaceable by other specialist.
The Tie-rod ends are ~R560 and R580 excl VAT from Mitsubishi.
I am taking my car to Pro CV and Steering in the Cape. Apparently it is a known problem (R950 incl of alignment to fix)

Re: Steering column Knock
Well this site is a waste of time, I have been trying to find information on how to replace lace the steering rack end bushes for a hour now. I have search "steering rack overhaul, Sheering rack rebuild, Overhaul manual, and other combinations to no avail. The site is too complicated and not user friendly.
