EGT for 2005 3.2

Mon Jan 11, 2010 4:19 pm

Hi

I'm considering installing an EGT in my PJ. Any advise on which one to install, what probes and then where in Cape Town would be the best to buy from?
What should the readings be on the different probes to ensure safe working of the engine and all parts involved?

Hi Jaco_n,

I recently got a Gen2 TDi without a EGT gauge. Any luck yet with sourcing a center for the installation?

Hi

I haven't installed one yet. I'm still in two minds and cannot get a clear indication from forums should one install it if you bought the vehicle second hand. I bought it with 130 000km on the clock and they say that damage will already be done before 100 000km and wasting money to install it. So I'm still contemplatin git. SAC does it, can't remember the price and then Goch & Cooper in Brackenfell as well. they install the MAD unit as far as I know and cost R 2700.00 excl VAT with the EGT sensor plus one hour labour of R430.00.

You can however add more sensors if you would like with an increased cost.

Thanks for the reply Jaco. I can see your point about damage already done, which is fair. From a non-mechanical background I would however think that this could still save you in a difficult scenario when far from home and the temps go up. At least it will be a compromise not to keep on driving until destruction set in imo. I must admit that I was hoping it would be under 2k though.

MGL avionics use to sell a 4 probe guage for about R1300 including one probe, which was relatively simple to install yourself.

It's the TC-2 which you would look at. Call them on 021 855 1383 . They are in Somerset West.

that's my thoughts as well, better save than sorry, but it is expensive to install, but it will most likely save you money should it detect a problem.
this is the reply I received from MGL in Somerset West:

The cost of the Infiniteq Single TC1 is R1 194.00 inc vat An EGT bolt type is required at R258.00 inc vat. This probe has a one metre cable which is too short for the average vehicle installation and it has to be extended using K-Type extension wire which we do not supply.

Courier fees are payable pending on destination.

At the moment we do not have stock. This is a fast moving item and should you wish to order one please let us know via e-mail and we can advise you once we have stock again. Lead time on average is two to three weeks.

MGL Avionics does not provide technical assistance with the our products into vehicles.
