Eastern Freestate Gem!

Mon Nov 15, 2010 8:30 am

Hi guys and gals!

Just back from a lovely weekend in the Eastern Freestate, at a place called Lesoba. This was such a good surprise that I thought I'd share it with you.

Lesoba is located close to Fouriesburg on the Lesotho border, about 20km south of Clarens down the Caledon River valley. There are two lovely, clean, well appointed sand stone cottages overlooking a dam and valley, two very romantic "flats" and some other fixed accommodation ... all in all it can sleep around 30 people. There are also large rolling lawns with good shade for tent or caravan camping with communal cooking area and ablusions.

There are too many activities to mention, but the kids loved cycling around the large yard, feeding the lambs and swimming in the dam. Quads and bikes (motorised and the archaic pedal type) are allowed and there are good hiking routes. Also an easy drive up the mountain for spectacular views over the eastern Free State and Lesotho.

Best of all, they have a fairly challenging 4x4 route, included in the price of you stay there. With five little ones in the Paj I could only do the first hour of the three hour route, but in that time we encountered a few nice obstacles like two river crossings, badly rutted incline, very taxing steep and uneven uphill with loose rocks and gravel, some uphill steps, hairpins on steep downhills and lots of that lovely sticky Eastern Freestate mud. My co-driver, a platkar owner, was absolutely amazed at what a proper 4x4 can do. The bug has bitten :)

Rates are very very reasonable ... R 200 per adult, kids under 12 half price and if they really like you preschool kids are free. I will highly recommend you take a weekend out there ... well worth it. Get more information at http://www.wheretostay.co.za/lesoba/ ... and as always "tell them we sent you".

Thanks for this!

We are planning a trip to Clarens, and this will be the perfect "closing weekend" to the trip.

Anyone going in this direction must also try Seletwane http://www.wheretostay.co.za/seletwane/at the top of the Oliviershoek Pass for a secluded hide-away. Not much opportunity to engage 4x4, but really a quiet haven.

Agreed .. their chalet nr. 2 is brilliant. Also their sister establishment Dumbe on the escarpment. But if you're venturing that side of the berg there is nothing to beat Ingwe Cabin. Situated on a 4x4 track midway bewteen Little Sitzerland and Alpine Heath ... heavenly!

Hmmm...

Another possibility for the next trip, thanks. I didn't know about Ingwe cabin!

Definiately also recommended. We've been there several times and can't wait to get back there again. This what you do when the wife doesn't like the bosveld and you have a bunch of little kids ... you scout for nice places with affordable fixed accommodation around the Berg. Just don't let that "easy 4x4 track" bit on the web site fool you ... I once needed every inch of traction I could find to get a heavily loaded Colt bakkie up the final steep approach to Ingwe ... after about a week's rain ... great fun an lots of glorious sticky mud :)

One more option for your trip, and just to confuse you heelemal, what about Moolmanshoek? Not too far from Clarence (in a "part of longer trip" sort of way) with great accommodation, hearty meals and a very rewarding 4x4 track.
