Transkei trip advise please

Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:28 am

We have 2 weeks to do the Transkei at the end of March.I would appreciate if our experienced Transkei guys (4E ;) ) can help here.We will be traveling in the Syncro Camper ,so slight limitations with road conditions as it is wide and high and my wife`s back is fragile.2 days at a camping site is long enough .Of course we would like to see the most scenic places.
We would also like to meat some of our E L Guys for some tee ;) .
Thank
Clem

VW no problem.
Just take spare tyre or two.
Where do you intend camping?

Eish Gerhardt that will be great ,I only got the idea after reading the other post of the member ? on the forum that just done a Transkei trip.I have T4A with me ( Im at sea at the moment till 2nd March),so I can`t do too much planning but will be able to follow your atternary on Mapsource.I usually don`t plan to much, just get in and go ,but I realize that the Wildcoast has to many beautiful hidden places that can be missed. Thanks again for offering to help plan a itinerary.I have no plans yet,I can camp near E L the first night as I am only 4.5 hrs from E L.From there on I can keep moving eastward .Would you suggest doing the whole stretch eastward along the coast and then returning via the main road coming back or can we do a scenic trip coming back west as well ? I leave it in you capable hands,I have read enough on the forums to know that you have traveled that part of the world extensively and trust your judgment ;) I have 2 spare wheels .

Clem,

I would plan your 2 week trip as follows:

Include the following camp sites working from East to West:
  • Mbotyi Lodge (2 days) S31 27.870 E29 43.936
  • Cremorne Estate (3 days) S31 35.888 E29 31.973
  • White Clay (2 day) S31 59.663 E29 08.273
  • Dwesa (3 days) S32 18.236 E28 49.823
  • Double Mouth (not really Transkei, but a nice spot) (2 days) S32 43.400 E28 18.842
  • Bosbokstrand (again not Transkei, but very nice) (2 days) S32 46.879 E28 10.971
Look at this and amend / add / delete.
Once you agree on your itinerary, we can start looking at what you should look at when at each place.

Sounds great so far ,let`s go with that and see how it goes.Do you think one needs bookings for the bigger camps.I would prefer a flexible itinerary without having to stay on schedule with bookings.I just need some help with Mapsource. On T4A the route cuts a straight line from one point to another when using the route tool and I don`t see much in the way of roads in the Wildcoast area on Garmap Streetmaps, what to do ?

Two things to do:
Unless you go in peak times, I doubt whether it would be necessary.
For Dwesa, I would book through

Which map? I hope that you got the one I suggested, because it's the best by far (and it's not a Land Rover! )

I will start ASAP to list the places I would recommend for each camp.
Maybe I should wait till you have the map, so that you can mark the points.

My bad,not mapostudio but The maps as per you link ;) sounds like a good quality map .Like I said,I will only be back on land on 1st March when I will be able to see the map,so we can wait till then ,up to you, but I`m so anxious now :D I think you can give a view hints ,I will look on Google earth and T4A .
